Flashback is a free photography app from Epilogue that recreates the visual output of the 1998 Nintendo Game Boy Camera on modern smartphones. The app can operate in two modes, allowing users to either connect an original Game Boy Camera cartridge through Epilogue's GB Operator accessory or simulate the experience using a phone's built-in camera. In Software Mode, Flashback reproduces the original camera's 128 by 112 pixel resolution, four-shade image rendering and dithering process. The app is designed to emulate the characteristics of the original hardware rather than apply a standard retro-style filter.
The app includes 32 selectable colour palettes, including classic grayscale and Game Boy-inspired green tones alongside additional custom options. Users can adjust settings such as shutter speed, gain, exposure, sharpness, dither and grain, with controls based on the original Mitsubishi M64282FP image sensor. Flashback also supports video recording with audio captured through the smartphone microphone.
