AI-Assisted Cancer Screenings

miCheckup Analyzes miRNA Patterns for Cancer Signals

miRoncol Health is expanding preventive cancer screening with miCheckup, a blood test that profiles microRNA (miRNA) and uses a proprietary AI-trained algorithm to identify patterns associated with cancer. Available to eligible asymptomatic adults in Ontario, the service combines blood collection through LifeLabs with virtual clinical review. If a suspected cancer signal is identified, the CAD $1,299 service includes an eligible private whole-body MRI to support further investigation. A positive signal is not considered a cancer diagnosis.

The approach combines molecular testing, AI analysis and follow-up imaging within one screening pathway. For miRoncol Health, the direct-pay model creates a commercial route alongside existing provincial screening programs while establishing infrastructure that could support additional preventive services. The company is also researching miRNA applications across heart, brain and metabolic health, potentially allowing the platform to expand beyond cancer into broader chronic disease screening.

AI-enhanced Biomarker Screening
Blood-based molecular signals paired with machine learning create room for earlier risk detection models that sit between routine checkups and specialist diagnostics.
Direct-pay Preventive Diagnostics
Consumer-funded screening pathways introduce new commercialization models for advanced tests that may operate alongside publicly funded healthcare systems.
Integrated Virtual Screening Pathways
Combining lab collection, AI interpretation, virtual review and follow-up imaging reshapes preventive care into a more coordinated end-to-end service experience.

Who This Affects Most

Preventive Healthcare
Expanded screening platforms can shift value toward risk identification before symptoms appear, creating new service categories for asymptomatic populations.
Diagnostic Imaging
Private MRI access linked to molecular test results broadens the role of imaging providers within early investigation and preventive health ecosystems.
Biotechnology
miRNA profiling supports scalable platform development across cancer and chronic disease, opening pathways for multi-condition molecular health monitoring.
