Tesla will has indicated that it will not use leather materials for its Model 3 interior. Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, originally outlined the direction at the company’s yearly shareholder meeting. The company has been looking to make a leather-less Model 3 interior but came across challenges with the car's steering wheel. This was due to the fact that the steering wheel would have to respond to the car's heating system.
The company initially made leather-free seats available in its vehicles two years ago, where synthetic seats could be purchased for Tesla Model 3, Model X as well as Model S vehicles
As well certain company shareholders initially proposed animal-free car interiors in 2015 and requested Tesla to make this change by the year 2019.
This announcement makes it clear that Tesla is taking steps to meet the shareholder request form 2015.
