The Miami Marlins Wore Number 16 to Honor the Late Jose Fernandez

Tragically, the Miami Marlins' 24 year old ace pitcher Jose Fernandez died in a boating accident only days ago. To honor the young man, the Marlins all wore number 16 for last night's game -- the number that Fernandez wore during his tenure with the team.

Teams wearing honorary numbers is in itself not a new practice. In fact, each year on Jackie Robinson day, every Major League Baseball player wears the legendary athlete's number 42 to honor his contribution to the sport. However, while the number 42 is worn in celebration, the Miami Marlins' wore number 16 in mourning.

Despite the somber mood of the game, Dee Gordon, close friend to Fernandez, honored his fallen teammate further by hitting a lead-off home run, breaking into tears as he rounded home.
