Malerie Marder, a photographer based in New York, New York, has traveled to the cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam Marder in the Netherlands in order to capture the life of a sex worker. These bleak portraits have been gathered over the course of five years, capturing women who support themselves and their families through legal prostitution.
Although a stark look in what appears to be a sad life, Malerie Marder writes that the women are “part hallucinatory and part real, [they] intrinsically have a different relationship to their bodies. Women’s bodies hide as much as they reveal. The thought of how they got there was deeply troubling. My camera was a passport into a gray, hidden world; the result of a liberal society where free will is a question mark.”
