Space-Breaching Mirrorless Cameras

Nikon and NASA Work on the Handheld Universal Lunar Camera

Nikon is currently working closely with NASA to develop the Handheld Universal Lunar Camera. This is a camera system with a mirrorless design made to capture images in low lighting and be able to withstand the harsh environment of the lunar atmosphere.

The two companies are working on developing the product for the upcoming Artemis III mission to capture their return to the moon. It will be launching sometime during September 2026 with the goal of exploring the lunar south pole. This is a region of the Moon that has water ice within the craters, making it a topic of interest for scientists. However, they are compromised by the lighting and temporal conditions. The Handheld Universal Lunar Camera draws elements from Nikon's archives and implements technology by NASA.
