Once rich in opium, human and arms trafficking, Doi Tung, Thailand, suffered both economically and environmentally until the late 1980s when Princess Srinagarindra, also known as Princess Mother, started the Doi Tung Development Project.

The Doi Tung Development Project not only set out to eradicate the illicit trafficking acts in the area, but also in improving the lives of the people. They also sought economic and environmental development by creating sustainable businesses where products such as macadamia nuts and coffee beans are locally grown, and are then sold in the Doi Tung stores around Thailand. Other products include mulberry paper, handmade carpets, ceramics and many more.

Divided into three phases that span over thirty years, the social enterprise’s people-centered approach has been recognized by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime as one of the most successful methods of alternative development.
