Apple's new iPad mini uses its first Acoustic Display, an audio setup that turns the screen into part of the speaker system for fuller sound from a small tablet. It gives iPad mini buyers a redesign aimed at stronger bass and higher volume without adding visible speaker hardware.
Specially built woofers send low frequencies through the display, while tweeters are tucked between the front glass and the aluminum shell. That sealed construction also supports the tablet's IP67 rating for added dust and water resistance. Wi-Fi models start at $699, and Wi-Fi and Cellular models start at $849. Preorders open Wednesday, October 28, and availability begins Friday, November 6.
At $699, the iPad mini makes speaker design part of its buying pitch instead of a background spec. The Acoustic Display approach shifts expectations for compact tablets by linking louder sound with a sealed build that also adds durability.

What's Driving This Trend
- Acoustic Display Hardware
- Screens that double as sound components create new room for compact devices to deliver richer audio without expanding bezels or adding visible speaker grilles.
- Sealed Multimedia Design
- Water-resistant construction paired with stronger embedded audio signals a growing premium on devices that combine entertainment performance with everyday durability.
- Mini Tablet Premiumization
- Smaller tablets are gaining differentiated features that position portability as a high-end experience rather than a lower-cost compromise.
Who This Affects Most
- Consumer Electronics
- Device makers have fresh opportunities to rethink internal component layouts as displays, speakers, and enclosures become more functionally integrated.
- Mobile Computing
- Tablet manufacturers can compete through sensory upgrades that make compact form factors more appealing for gaming, streaming, and hybrid productivity.
- Audio Technology
- Component suppliers are positioned to develop specialized transducers and materials that transform flat surfaces into higher-performance sound systems.
