AI-Powered Dinosaur Tracking Apps

DinoTracker App Uses AI To Classify Ancient Dinosaur Footprints

DinoTracker is a newly developed mobile app that uses artificial intelligence to help identify dinosaur footprints, created by researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum research center in Berlin in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh. The tool lets scientists and casual users upload photos or sketches of fossil tracks, featuring automated analysis that infers which kind of dinosaur likely made them. By focusing on footprint shape and structure, the app offers rapid insights that previously required specialist expertise.

The underlying AI model was trained on nearly 2,000 real fossil prints and millions of simulated variations that mimic how footprints deform over time. It evaluates eight measurable characteristics, such as toe spacing, heel placement, and weight distribution, then compares them against a reference set of known tracks. In tests, its classifications aligned with expert judgments roughly 90 percent of the time, including on long-debated specimens.

For consumers and citizen scientists, DinoTracker turns paleontology into an accessible, interactive experience that invites participation in real research. The app highlights a growing trend toward AI-driven field tools that blend education, gaming-style interaction, and rigorous data analysis. What sets it apart is its ability to reveal subtle pattern links—such as bird-like features in dinosaurs more than 200 million years old—thereby expanding how people visualize evolutionary history on their smartphones.
