Underwater Kites

'Deep Green' Tidal Turbines Fly Under Ocean Surface

‘Deep Green’ tidal turbines look like underwater kites fly up from the ocean floor, producing power beneath the ocean surface. Turbines are individually attached to a wing and rudder, which is then tethered to the ocean floor by several hundred feet of cable.

The Deep Green tethered kites are able to capture energy from tidal currents ten times faster than the speed of the current stream and can generate 500 kilowatts of power. It’s impressive output for a device with a 40’ wingspan--a size much smaller than other tidal-energy designs.
