Research conducted by the Oregon State University College of Engineering shows that dedicated 'Bike Boxes' at stoplights are beneficial to the safety of cyclists. These Bike Boxes were trialed at several intersections across the state, though following successful reporting data, will be expanded to hundreds more intersections over time.
The Bike Boxes are a dedicated, painted section at the front right-hand side of an intersection with an image of a bicycle. This section is a cyclist-only waiting section for the stoplight that cars are not allowed to wait in, only to pass through once the light is green and cyclists have gone. This offers more clarity on how cyclists, or more particularly, groups of cyclists, are intended to operate at road intersections.
One aspect of these Bike Boxes is the fact that they push the waiting section for cars further back, by about two meters.
