'Artificial Imagination' is a new gallery on display in the San Francisco Bay Area. The gallery shows not only artwork explicitly created by artificial intelligence services, but also artwork inspired by these services. For example, of the eight artists on display, some chose to use AI-generated artworks as a starting point to then create their own interpretation of the art, while others experimented with a variety of different prompts and instructions to instruct the AI tool to produce detailed, coherent artwork.
While AI art-generating tools and services exist in a controversial space where there is a lot of deliberation on whether or not AI-generated art is truly "art" or simply a useful tool. One of the artists on display in Artificial Imagination, Ellie Pritts, stated: “I think it is really important to showcase right now that this is a new medium. These are serious artists; this is legitimate work."
