Put together by Minneapolis-based photographer Selena Salfen, the 'Sanctuary' photo series focuses on the VINE Sanctuary, a group that provides a safe haven for animals that escaped or were rescued from the food industries and abusive circumstances such as cockfights.

The animals shown in these animal sanctuary photos were rescued not just from meat farms and illegal settings, but also from experimental science facilities and households bringing up farm animals as if they were regular house pets.

The people working in the sanctuary also have interesting back-stories, many of them having experienced discrimination for a variety of reasons.

Salfen put together the series at a time when she was considering switching to veganism.
