Algorithmic Opt-Out Settings

Bluesky Has Added an Algorithmic Opt-Out Feature

Bluesky introduced an algorithmic opt-out feature that lets users prevent their public posts from appearing in the app’s Discover feed. The setting appears under Privacy and Security and can take up to an hour to take effect, giving users more control over how widely their posts are amplified while keeping them public.

The preference is saved at the account level, meaning it can travel with users across other apps built on the AT Protocol, although those apps can choose whether to honor the flag. The feature targets discoverability rather than privacy, since posts remain public by default, and follows Bluesky’s recent update adding support for longer videos.

For users, the opt-out offers a way to reduce unwanted algorithmic amplification without limiting posts to private audiences. The account-level setting also reflects a broader shift toward more granular audience and discoverability controls across social platforms.

Algorithmic Visibility Controls
Granular settings for feed inclusion create openings for platforms that differentiate through user-directed distribution rather than default algorithmic amplification.
Portable Social Preferences
Account-level controls that move across decentralized protocols signal demand for identity systems where consent and discoverability choices persist beyond a single app.
Public but Less Discoverable Posting
Visibility layers between private sharing and broad recommendation support new social behaviors centered on selective reach without fully restricting access.

Industries Being Reshaped

Social Media Platforms
Competing networks can build trust by offering nuanced discovery settings that balance creator exposure, user safety, and algorithmic transparency.
Decentralized Web Infrastructure
Protocol-based preference flags introduce opportunities for interoperable governance tools that standardize how apps respect user intent across ecosystems.
Digital Privacy Software
Consumer privacy services may expand into visibility management by helping users understand and control how public content is indexed, recommended, and amplified.
