This Dutch Building Now Boasts Solar Panels & Insect Hotels

A former bank building in the Dutch city of Eindhoven has been given more than just a facelift, being put through a total transformation at the end of which has emerged a building that is far more eco-friendly than before whilst also featuring upgraded modern aesthetics.

The 'Fellenoord 15' building was revitalized by none other than UNStudio, whose efforts include installing rooftop solar panels that can handle 35 percent of the building's electricity needs, alongside technologies such as energy monitors. The building is also greener than before thanks to the inclusion of plantings as well as other biodiversity-focused features such as insect hotels, spaces for bats and welcoming areas for birds.

What's more, this project is said to have only required about 40 percent of the carbon dioxide footprint compared to a complete rebuild, which speaks to the wisdom of eco-friendly renovations as an alternative to total rebuilds.
