The 'Janus' Cloak Helps Protect Car Batteries From Temperature Swings

A team of highly innovative scientists and engineers working out of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University over in China have developed a high-tech car cloak that is designed to be able to protect electric vehicle batteries from being damaged or having their lifespan cut short by exposure to undue temperature extremes as well as drastic changes in temperature.

The 'Janus' car cloak comprises an outer layer that is designed to be able to bounce the sun's heat back out, and an interior layer that aims to keep vehicle-generated residual heat inside. This particular design aims to help protect vehicle components from sudden changes in temperature, with testing revealing that the vehicle was capable of being able to maintain a temperature nearly eight degrees Celsius cooler than the outdoors during the day, and nearly seven degrees warmer than outside conditions at night.

Offering the added advantage of fire-retardant properties, the 'Janus' car cloak is currently an experimental offering, but its use of relatively inexpensive and rugged materials means it offers promise for widespread adoption.
