Carbon fiber, the high tech material used for supercars and space travel, also makes for a great cello. How good is a carbon fiber cello? So good that Yo-Yo Ma is playing one for the inauguration.

The black single-piece cello will withstand the cold without cracking or splitting, thereby ruining a multimillion-dollar cello. The cello is created by Luis and Clark of Massachusetts. Ma is not the first to play the carbon fiber instrument for the inauguration. The Joint Service Orchestra string section—all 44 of them—used the carbon fiber cellos, violins, violas, and basses for the We Are One concert.

His other cello, a 1733 Montagnana from Venice, is worth more than $2 million. Mr. Ma will be playing a score by John Williams with Itzhak Perlman on violin, Gabriela Montero on piano and Anthony McGill on clarinet. Mr. Perlman could not be reached for comment. (bookofjoe.typepad)
