It was international news when Britain banned smoking in public places on July 1. After the ban went into effect, sales of cigarettes dropped 7%. Borders, the book retailer, reported a 260% increase in sales of self-help books aiding in smoking cessation.

There is light at the end of the tunnel for smokers. Tobacco companies have created websites with maps of pubs with outdoor smoking facilities such as beer gardens.

Because smoking in the UK is decreasing does not make dictatorial Government a success. I smoke I am not giving up, a zealot telling me not to smoke is not a good thing. Ban cars,, car sales drop, global emmissions fall, a success? Success in stopping somehting, is viewed as such by bigots, when they want to stop something they don't like or want to do, happening. If you run a pub, or other social venue, there is a higher chance you will be seeing smoking bans as a disaster, not a success. Blairites and centralizers call it a success, sa they have achieved their aim. Next in line will be alcohol, will that be called a success, when we go to bootleggers for drinks? To parpaphrase, When they rounded up the Jews, it was nothign to do with me, when they rounded up the catholics it was nothing to do with me, when they rounded up the blacks it was nothing to do with me, when they rounded me up, there was no one left to hear.

The goverment is appointed to look out for the public's general safety, health, and best interest even if it's against the public's opinion. Smoking is unhealthy that has been proven so what is wrong in the goverment trying to protect us from our own bad habit or someone elses. They aren't telling you can't smoke in your own home or in your own vehicle. The government also makes up wear seats belts, says we can't drink and drive, do drugs, kill, and has imposed speed limits why? Because it protects us. People can't be trusted to do what is in the best intrest of themselves and others is why government does so for us. Obviously anarchyintheuk you are taking this out of proportion.

Some people like a nanny state, other prefer freedom. Driving kills people, so why not ban that also? ALcohol kills people, ban it, being alive leads to death. Life has risks, personal choice involves being able to take risk. Risk that may harm self and/or others, it is how animals evolve. This Government was elected by less than 26% of the population. nearly three quarters of the population don't want this government, never mind those with my own political position. A Government is elected to serve the people, not dictate to the people. I don't want or need a politicians cotton wool. If people are too thick to understand the risks they take, then perhaps evolution would be better served without their gene pool. 'UK Smoking Ban a Success' is a success for bigots and scaremongers, it is not a success for Democracy or civil liberty, never mind economically, where it is an abject disaster.
