Self-Inflating Tires - Coda Lets You Keep on Driving (GALLERY)

Flat tires suck. We all know that. Even for those who are apt at changing their wheels themselves, it’s never convenient to have to stop and get out. For those of us who aren’t so auto savvy, it’s a really miserable experience.
I think everyone who drives will appreciate Coda Development’s new self-inflating tires. They ensure you never have to stop and get out to change your wheels. In fact, all you have to do is keep on driving thanks to a peristaltic pump. That’s the same kind of contraption used to get the fluid moving in a hospital IV.
It sounds really fancy, the it’s actually expected to cheap and more reliable than existing tech. Coda will be debuting the system in April at the 2008 SAE World Congress.
The system uses a rotating wheel that, as it turns, pushes the tube's contents through one end. The movement causes a low pressure area which pulls more "whatever" into the other end. In Coda's case, the car's wheel is the rotating wheel and your air-filled tire plays the part of the tube. A pressure sensitive valve ensures that your tire stays at a constant pressure.
