Sketchy Slum Tours - Rio Favela Trafficking Tours
A lot of exotic destinations, including Rio de Janeiro, have two sides to them: the beautiful, touristy side shown in the media, and the “real,” sketchier side.
Not everyone wants the postcard experience; in fact, some companies are actually paid to set up traffickers and tourists. Private Tours, a Rio tourism company decided to run specialized tours in the slums, or favelas for those looking for rougher parts of the city. They offered special excursions like photo ops with genuine gangs and drug dealers.
It said the traffickers told the tourists stories about their time in prison, described the life of a Rio drug dealer, and would then pose for pictures with their guns -- as long as their faces were not photographed.
