Ben Heck has released a step by step guide to building your own retro handheld.  This DS-inspired portable plays vintage Atari games.

The first step was to cut down an Atari 2600 motherboard into a small shape that still worked, as seen below. The resulting piece is the same width as the standard 4" x 4" I cut them into but is about 1/2" shorter in height. This required me to attach all the cartridge wiring to the data and address bus locations on the chips. I used thin, solid-strand Ultra ATA hard drive wire for this, though for the power and ground connections I had to double up the wires to provide enough current (learned that from the old Vagabond 2000) (techeblog)
