Pregnant Man Thomas Beatie has created a media storm with the debut of his newborn baby pictures. The ‘Pregnant Man Pictures’ storm was strong enough to knock TrendHunter down (generating 150,000 page views in an afternoon). And I must admit that I agree with our Chief Hunter Jeremy Gutsche’s noted, “It’s all getting a bit ridiculous.” Fittingly enough, Thomas Beatie has been nominated for a Most Talked About Drag Queen or Transgender Person [for making the headlines, good or bad] Award in the 2008 Gay Socialites Awards. Given that the search for ‘Pregnant Man Baby Pictures’ was number one for a couple days, he’ll probably win. Thomas Beatie shares the nomination with actress Candis Kane from the TV show “Dirty Sexy Money”, and outrageous New York nightlife personality and Heatherette muse Amanda Lepore, among others. It’s very fitting that the nomination includes the clarification, ‘for making the headlines, good or bad’, because it is very debatable whether the whole Pregnant Man media saturation is good or bad. Thomas Beatie has made headlines everywhere, sparked passionate debates, and even appeared on Oprah.

| I'm sorry, but a female who has a sex change, leaving her female sex organs intact (ovaries, uterus, birth canal, etc.) does not make her a man. This is a cheap shot for fame. Men are incapable of giving birth and that glorious, beautiful, ability is, was and always will be the gift to a woman. Congratulations (I guess) to this person (female) becoming what she believed she was/is (male) but either choose to be a man or admit you are a woman who gave birth. Apparently you are not too disappointed in your previous abilities as a woman or you would have had all the female parts taken out. |

| My girlfriend, a reviewer for Publisher's Weekly, coincidentally was given Beatie's memoir a few months ago. Admittedly, as a queer woman I'm at the top of the list for a sympathetic audience, but I do have to say that in telling the circumstances of his pregnancy he makes a great argument for his integrity. I believe that people have a right to create a happy, healthy family however they choose. If they can leap forward decades of progress for civil rights as well, I welcome that. |
