One of the icons of the U.S. maybe the cheap plastic chair. Criss-cross the U.S., perhaps the world, and you will run across white plastic chairs. A gallery in Tokyo is paying homage to the chair via Sam Durant's porcelain chairs during Art Basel 2008. Using porcelain techniques originated by the Chinese, he is making the cheap, mass-produced chairs into one-off, handmade, art pieces. His statement is pretty clear: the global community will accept cheap Chinese goods without much question.
