London-based design studio Unknown Works designs the Pigment House, which is a residence located in North London. It is defined by a terraced landscape and dusty pink tones that are chosen to brighten up the space. It rests on top of a steel hillside originally sloped up on all sides, creating a dark space. The excavated section is replaced with multiple levels to enhance light exposure.
Ben Hayes, director of the studio explains the new home's design to Dezeen, stating that "The concept originated from the practical need for a more open day-lit living space that connects fluidly to the garden. The transformation of the landscape was essential to unlocking this. The choice of tones for pigments respond to the existing planting, the giant mimosa tree to the rear and red ivy all along the street."
