Orkut and Facebook are headed towards a full-out war over international social media markets. While Facebook has the lead in the United States, Orkut has a foothold in Brazil and India.
But Facebook is gaining, and Google (the owner of Orkut) is having none of it. Orkut and Facebook offer the same service, so it’s all about advertising. Facebook offered the ability to import your contacts from Orkut (giving it a better ability to convert users). The added convenience seemed to be giving Facebook a lift, but now that feature doesn’t work. The kids at TechCrunch have a hunch that there’s more at work here than broken code.
