Piet Hein Eek, a Dutch designer, has released a set of wallpapers through manufacturer NLXL Labs as part of the company's newest series of designer prints. Eek's designs in particular are interesting, though, as they incorporate non-standard wallpaper materials like copper and cork.
Piet Hein Eek's copper wallpapers are the most fascinating of the series. Rather than just pasting a thin sheet of copper on the wallpaper, Eek took advantage of copper's uniquely colorful oxidation process.
As many know from looking at old statues and buildings' roofs, copper oxidizes to a bright green color in the air. And, when exposed to different chemicals, the cuprous compound can change to an array of different hues. Eek's designs for NLXL Labs are the result of exposing copper in his workshop to different acids over the course of several months.
