For the nine-day duration of the festival, the Chinese community abstains from sex, meat, alcohol, and tobacco to appease the nine imperial gods and ensure a prosperous year ahead. The people that take part in the festival believe abstinence gives them the superhuman power to walk on hot coals, drive metal objects through their cheeks and bathe in hot oil--without any trace of harm.
