UK-based design firm Projects Office has created a comfortable and functional interior for the mental health unit at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh.
The facility was designed to feel inviting, warm and non-institutional. The design team collaborated with art consultancy firm Ginkgo Projects to create a distinct space that "is neither hospital nor home" - the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service has its own identity.
The design team interviewed staff members, patients, and their families to understand how their design can contribute to a positive patient experience. The space is painted with bright yet non-abrasive colors that lend a warm and safe feel. At the same time, the patient rooms are designed so that the occupants can personalize their space.
