We’ve seen plenty of luxury vodkas, but Dos Lunas Extra Anejo tequila is the epitome of opulent fine spirits.

Extra Anejo is bottled in hand-blown Baccarat decanters and aged for 10 years in Spanish sherry oak casks. It comes with undeniably beautiful crystal stoppers as well as a sterling silver necklace and key. But all luxury comes at a cost, in the case of Dos Lunas, a $2,500 price!

Dos Lunas currently sells three varieties of tequila. Dos Lunas Silver ($44.95) is unaged, and Dos Lunas Reposado ($49.95) is aged for nine months.

From the press release:

Like all Dos Lunas tequilas, Grand Reserve is harvested from 100% fully mature blue agave plants. Because the plants only reach maturity after 8 to 10 years, the entire production process for Dos Lunas Grand Reserve is nearly 20 years. Says Dos Lunas founder Richard C. Poe II, “In many ways Grand Reserve is closer to the finest single malts and cognacs than to other tequilas. We set out to create the world’s best tequila and that goal informed every decision that was made, from growth through production to packaging.” The result is an Extra Añejo of remarkable complexity, unparalleled smoothness and luxurious presentation – a tequila that sets a new standard for the category. Darn better be a 1 liter bottle worth. Looks Good, Beats Patron brand (which I love). CA Home to Margaritas. El Chollo, Pasadena CA. But for 2,500 a bottle, make it 1 liter please. Thanks. Or 1/2 gal size. Make it worth my time. Same for cognac, wines, liquors.

It would appear that you would be paying more for the actual presentation of the tequila rather than the tequila its self. Crystal stoppers, a silver necklace w/ a key, and an ebonized wood casing (I assume that means they painted a wood box black it all seems like they are trying to compensate for some shortcoming of the tequila...probably taste. I too hail from the home of Margaritas, good old sunny (well rainy -at least today)Southern California. Patron which is a very popular brand is good, but the honey they mix with the agave during the distilling process makes it much too sweet for me. I myself prefer Don Julio Anjeo. Great taste and very smooth. Also I can't forget to mention Cabo Wabo...thats not half bad either. A great thing about the higher end spirits is that hangovers are rare because there are less impurities in the alcohol its self. That is why a Jose Cuervo hang over and Patron or Don Julio hangover (if you get one) are very very different things. Jose Cuervo buys agave remnants (parts of the plant that other tequila distilleries don use) then add sugar during the distilling process to make up for the lack of natural sweetness of the agave. The impurities in the cane sugar is what causes the harshness of the hangovers.
