In 2012, London will host the summer Olympics, and to lead up to the event, city planners are implementing a Cultural Olympiad to generate excitement. It isn't novel for Olympics host cities to stage a Cultural Olympiad to infuse the spirit of the Olympics into the city's existing culture. We've seen such cultural exhibits in Athens, Beijing and Vancouver.

Expect the London Cultural Olympics to have a bit of highbrow British flair. Twelve new public works of art will open, the Royal Shakespeare Co. will put on a Shakespearean festival, street carnivals will take place, a film competition will begin, and a beautiful light show will electrify Windsor Castle. The project will cost the city about $70 million.
