 Carticipate.com The high price of fuel means that car pooling and ride sharing are becoming a necessity for an ever increasing number of people. Carticipate now offers the first location-based mobile social network application for ride sharing and car pooling on a mobile platform. It is free to download from Apple’s App Store on iTunes, and it allows users to indicate where they are going and when, broadcast the information, and allow others heading in the same direction (with iPhones) to find each other. At this stage Carticipate is limited by the small number of people who have joined as it was launched just a few weeks ago. However, if a mass of people opt to join the network, Carticipate is likely to become the “Craigslist of carpooling.”  Ride sharing and car pooling has been, up to this point, opportunistic since it isn’t practical to call or email several people every time one wants to share a ride, especially on short notice.
Location-based smart phones and social networks are colliding with a rise in fuel prices driving the carticipation model where social transportation will compliment and augment public transportation.
