The Museo Archeologico Virtuale in Italy is a unique interactive encounter with modern technology and architecture. The museum has more than 70 multimedia installations to provide virtual historical re-creations, projections and holograms to impress audiences.

Some of the interactive elements include virtual floor dust that reacts to footsteps, virtual book pages that move by finger tip, and automated greetings from ancient inhabitants of Pompeii. This museum is a place where kids can get involved, and people are encouraged to touch the exhibits.

You do the discovering here: Your footsteps scatter virtual dust along the floor to expose intricate mosaics from Pompeii’s House of the Faun, and your fingertips wipe away a misted glass to reveal a woman bathing after a visit to the caldarium (current.newsweek)

I think the internet has opened up a whole new world of possibility allowing the audience to see items in a collection that they may not ordinarily have the opportunity to encounter. This method allows individuals to see items in foreign countries that they may not have the opportunity to visit in person and view multimedia exhibits around the clock and without an admission fee. It also enables the museums to display objects that they may not simply have room or the resources to display otherwise. However, I think we need to be careful about taking this method too far. Images can be manipulated, and viewed out of context. For example, in Venice a statue of Donatello’s sits perched above a church and is carved disproportionately. When viewed alone as a picture, on the internet, the image can be taken out of context; when viewed from the ground and the angle it was intended to be taken in from, the image seems to be perfectly balanced upon it’s roost, possibly misleading the audience. Images on the internet also run the risk of being plagiarized and make it difficult to enforce and protect copyrights. Monet’s series of water lilies are enormous, when viewed in person. There sheer size and color combinations cannot be experienced over the internet, because technology has its limitations. Bernini’s sculptures are illuminated by the architecture and surrounding paintings to give the viewer a multisensory experience. Looking at an items and knowing there dimensions doesn’t always allow the audience to feel the intention of the piece when taken out of it's environment.
