Animal rights activists are pushing for human rights to be granted to apes… and especially to one chimp in particular named Hiasl. There motives are good - they want to ensure that apes like Hiasl are kept safe and well-provided for. Indeed, the way that apes have been treated in the name of science is appalling. But whether apes will actually be granted human rights is definitely a stretch and it will be interesting to see how this one plays out.
In a case that could set a global legal precedent for granting basic rights to apes, animal rights advocates are seeking to get the 26-year-old male chimpanzee legally declared a "person."
"If we can get Hiasl declared a person, he would have the right to own property. Then, if people wanted to donate something to him, he'd have the right to receive it," said Theuer, who has vowed to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights if necessary.
