If your office chair sits on carpet, you know how frustrating it can be to move around—kind of defeats the purpose of having wheels, doesn’t it? Until now we didn’t have many options the tacky, clear plastic mats designed to be placed on carpeted work spaces, but not everyone is ready for that type of kitsch. Finally a new alternative has hit the market—the hardwood floor mat. While the concept makes sense, the $300 price tag doesn’t. The high-end Hammacher Schlemmer mat will likely be followed up by cheaper knock-offs, if they haven’t been created already. If not, you can always put your carpentry skills to the test and build your own!
This portable office mat is 1" thick, comes fully assembled, stays in place, and will not warp or deteriorate, unlike typical plastic office mats that crack and splinter. It has two fold-out wings that are connected with a patent pending recessed hinge system hidden from view that will not mar surfaces nor snag carpet. The mat is made from Asian hardwood and finished with seven coats of scuff-resistant polyurethane coating, the same protection used on the most expensive installed hardwood floors. The mat has contoured beveled edges that allow chairs to roll on and off easily, and includes self-adhesive pads to protect hardwood floors.
