Grotto Studio Adds a New Shadow House to a Cottage in Perth

Australian design practice Grotto Studio adds a new extension to a vibrant cottage located in Perth dubbed the Shadow House. It is detailed with shadowy accents and added as a stark contrast to the space that already exists, which was constructed about three decades ago. The interior layout was entirely adapted to the existing cottage in order to retain the original elements and bring a balanced look.
Founder of the studio, Craig Nener told Dezeen, "It was crucial to preserve the cottage's charm and character while updating it to cater to contemporary living needs. The cottage was tastefully refurbished and integrated with new additions, making it a key feature of the design rather than being overshadowed by the new elements. The idea behind the design of the Shadow House is harmonious fusion – a blend of old and new, light and dark, traditional and modern. We aimed to craft a space that not only caters to practical living needs but also offers an immersive, sensory experience to its inhabitants."
