Grocery Chain Giant Eagle Taps SmartSense to Implement New IoT System

American supermarket chain Giant Eagle has partnered with SmartSense by Digi to implement a new internet-of-Things (IoT)-based temperature monitoring system in all of its stores. The new tech-forward solution is being used by the company in an effort to ensure that its products maintain their freshness and quality.
So far, Gaint Eagle has deployed over 32,000 SmartSense digital temperature tracking devices throughout its U.S-based stores. The IoT-enabled devices are able to automatically monitor Gaint Eagle's food assets and autonomously regulate its in-store freezers, refrigerators, and chillers. The system includes elements such as wireless sensors, food probes, remote monitoring software, digital checklists, and analytics tools.
“Specifically, capturing detailed data insights and prescriptive analytics via SmartSense’s advanced technologies will enhance our team members’ ability to monitor product freshness in real-time," said Vic Vercammen, vice president of risk and chief compliance officer at Giant Eagle.
