It make come as a shock to some, but the Netherlands offers a different kind of hot dog. It’s called Frikandel and it’s made of a combination of meats including HORSE. It’s seems very disturbing at first thought but then again, maybe it’s really not that horrific. Or shall I say not any more horrific than any other carnivorous habits of humankind. Lamb, anyone?
The chip shops, coffee shops, and other street food vendors of Amsterdam, where frikandel -- a deep-fried sausage made of beef, pork, chicken, and that most Continental of delicacies, horse -- is a stoner favorite... frikandel is native to the Netherlands and its immediate neighbors in Belgium and northwest Germany. Due to its somewhat vague provenance, Dutch eaters believe the same stories about frikandel that we believe about hot dogs: that the most unsavory body parts imaginable end up in the deep-fried mix.
