The premier car racing league Formula 1 (F1) is coming to a close for the season. Formula 1 has a big challenge for next year. The Formula 1 president says that the central message he has for next year is better fuel mileage.

Formula 1 cars currently get 3-4 miles per gallon. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent by teams just to get a few more RPMs out of the engine. Formula 1 is a league of racers where there is no budget. It will be fascinating to see the best engine designers struggle to design Formula 1 engines to be more fuel-efficient and still remain competitive. Imagine running a fuel measurement circuit at insane speeds and then slamming on the brakes!

The President of the FIA, Max Moseley, gave a stark warning to the auto makers (BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Fiat, Honda, Renault/Nissan, Toyota, etc) who control most of the Formula One teams. The fuel consumption is so high because the cars repeatedly surge up to 180 mph or more and then brake heavily, many times in each lap of a typical circuit. (evworld)
