By 2012, BT Telecom aims to release its fastest broadband ever, following a projected investment of £1.5 billion which will reach up to 10 million users. This is great news for computer lovers, but it gets better. BT Telecom is looking to increase the speed even further and are talking about possible speeds of 1,000 Mb/s!
This new development is subject to approval by OFCOM, but the possibilities offered by fibre optics could see huge leaps forward in providing faster, more reliable internet access to both urban and rural users.
The massive infrastructure investment should go some way toward helping Britain catch up to France, where household penetration of speedy Internet connections is about 50 times higher. But just how good the rollout will be for competition and consumers is still an open question.
The new fiber network, announced by new BT Chief Ian Livingston, will cover about 40% of the British population, giving those customers enough speed to run multiple bandwidth-hungry applications. This could allow, for example, some family members to watch high-definition movies while others are playing online games or viewing graphic-rich files or video.
