Matt Held is an artist who paints people’s Facebook profile pictures on request. All you do if you want an original painting of yourself is add him as a friend so he can access your profile portfolio and then he might paint you.
What a creative idea to get easy access to free profile pictures via Facebook… providing you give him your consent, of course. I think the pictures are brilliant. Let’s face it, people do upload a lot of great shots of themselves. It would be hilarious to view an exhibition of a whole series of these. The online community turned into a piece of art. Beautiful.
To be considered for a possible portrait, all you have to do is join the Facebook group and add Matt Held as your friend. The artist himself aims at collecting a series of 200 paintings, so be quick if you want to be part of the community of mirrored self-portraits.
Take a collection of these portraits and put them into the context of a gallery space or like setting, and you see a community of individuals—their likeness elevated and memorialized like the original commissioners of portrait painting; the rich and powerful—displayed as a portrait's original intent: expression of an individuals' character and moral quality.
