Extreme Makeover For the Web - Science Foundation Proposes Overhaul

The National Science Foundation is looking at completely overhauling the Internet. It’s proposing a complete transformation - in effect wiping the slate clean and starting fresh. Experts feel that this is the best approach for addressing the existing challenges of the current model. BBN Technologies is the agency charged with the task of spearheading this overhaul. They’ll be using GENI (Global Environment for Network Innovations) as the basis for experimentation. They hope to address key issues including security and mobility - all without disrupting the existing framework.
The National Science Foundation is sprucing up the internet, assigning the redesign oversight to BBN Technologies, which was a key player in the birth of the original internet. The plan is called Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI).
GENI is intended as a flatbed for research that will allow for experimentation while not affecting or damaging the existing internet. This is no tweak, it's a major overhaul. Many researchers believe a "clean-slate" approach is needed to truly address security, mobility, and other challenges.
