Uber Drivers in Kenya can Now Use an Uber-Branded E-Bike with Electric Boda

Uber, the global ride-hailing giant, has recently launched an electric motorbike service in Kenya, its first in Africa, as part of its commitment to achieve emissions-free operations by 2040. The service, called Electric Boda, will offer users a more sustainable and affordable option to move around and to have deliveries made. Electric Boda will consist of 3,000 bikes within six months, or just under a fifth of Uber’s fleet in Kenya. Drivers will see a 30-35% drop in their operating costs, and riders will pay 15-20% less than they do for a regular Uber motorbike trip.
Electric Boda is not only good for the environment, but also for the economy. Kenya has been leading the continent’s shift towards green energy, generating more than 90% of its power from renewable sources. The growth of the electric vehicles market in Africa has been slowed by a lack of adequate electric charging infrastructure and associated equipment. However, local firms have been setting up battery-swapping stations in major cities like Nairobi to save drivers time. Motorbike transport is a big employer in Kenya, absorbing millions of people who are unable to secure formal jobs.
