Chanel 2.55 purse launched an exhibit that is circling the globe to celebrate this icon of excess. Zaha Hadid is a world renown architect and she accepted the challenge to make a building that was permanent, yet portable! She designed a 7,500 square foot art center to pay tribute to a purse. The curvy, fluid surface is a stark contrast to the natural surroundings of Central Park in New York where the exhibit will be on display until moving to London.  Oh yeah, the building was paid for by Chanel, to showcase the work of 20 contemporary artists (Yoko Ono, Subodh Gupta, Sophie Calle, Daniel Buren among them) who were also commissioned to make art that has something to do with the company's line of quilted handbags. In truth, that's a pretty lame premise for an art exhibit. First thought: What were they thinking? Second thought: If ambitious luxury brand marketing is what it takes to get a leading architect to build in the city, so be it.
