I’ve been tempted to heave shoes at the television, but an Iraqi journalist actually did it - in person - at the President of the U.S.

A pair of size ten shoes were tossed right over the head of President Bush during a news conference in Iraq. An accredited journalist threw his shoes, one at a time, shouting “this is a goodbye kiss from the Iraqi people, dog.”

Bush clearly sees the shoe coming and ducks, otherwise it would have nailed him right in the kisser. Bush was making a surprise visit to Iraq. Bush shrugged off the shoes being heaved in his direction by saying “it’s like driving down the street and have people gesture not using all five fingers.

In Arab cultures showing the sole of a shoe is the ultimate insult. The BBC has the video from many angles.

During the trip, Mr Bush and Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki signed the new security agreement between their countries. The pact calls for US troops to leave Iraq in 2011 - eight years after the 2003 invasion that has in part defined the Bush presidency. Speaking just over five weeks before he hands over power to Barack Obama, Mr Bush also said the war in Iraq was not over and more work remained to be done. (uniquedaily)

Hee. I know it's not right, but I think this is hilarious.

On another tack: It demonstrates just how inapt the post 9/11 security measures are and will be in the future. Mind you: The guy was able to throw TWO shoes at Bush, that he thanks to his quick ducking could avoid, before security did anything. How many security types do you count on the vid? Secondly I wonder why this isn't on the frontpage of TH already. Isn't there a proper night shift at TH? :P

LMAO!!! I know it's wrong too. :-) However, I thought the ultimate insult, in Arab cultures, was an attempted left-hand handshake? If memory serves correct, the left hand is the 'wiping hand'...no further explanation needed, lol.

@ Happy, you can see if the editors are online in the "online now" feature at the top of the community page. So yeah, there is no regular night shift. Plus, if the main TH audience is in north america, publishing it at night won't do much good if the readers are asleep.

@Happy, I was thinking along those same lines. Security was horrible! I don't like President Bush but he deserves the best protection possible, nonetheless. Good thing those shoes didn't have something hidden inside!

Hahaha, I doubt trend hunting after 9/11 is as crucial as 24h homeland or presidential security. But the shoe throwing is scary, espically if its one of those killer high heels we've bee seeing at TH!
