Cindy Sherman is one of the best known contemporary artists, and this exhibition is her first in four years. The series of portraits show the full range of beauty and aging in women. Cindy Sherman shoots her own portrait in a studio and adds in backgrounds shot elsewhere. Cindy Sherman loves to play with her image by using different makeup and expressions to create what seems to be a range of different characters. Be sure to watch the video—fascinating.  Sherman seems ready to open doors usually closed to people looking to get behind the mask of an artist who has made an art out of hiding in plain view through a series of iconic images, using herself as a model (that she stoutly affirms are not self-portraits). To Sherman, these images are paintings; to critical theorists, they embody a post-modernist critique -- flares in the night illuminating issues of irony, gender, feminism, celebrity and pop culture.
