These Biodegradable Batteries Dissolve Inside the Body After Use
Michael Baxter — April 16, 2014 — Tech
The benefits of biodegradable batteries can be huge in the medical world, if integrated precisely. Being able to put a battery in a pacemaker that will simply dissolve after usage is a huge benefit when it comes to health and safety.
Professor John Rogers from the University of Illinois created this biodegradable battery. The dissolving batteries dissolve after three weeks in water, which is perfect given the amount of water in the body. There have been other batteries that dissolve, but they used an external power supply through a wireless connection. These batteries will be different because they will operate like normal batteries inside the body.
The battery can also be used in other places outside of the body as well. Like in a chemical sensor in the ocean or an oil spill.
