'Bella Italia,' the United Kingdom-based chain of franchised restaurants, announced that it is testing a fleet of robotic BellaBot waiters. The waiters are capable of performing basic tasks, such as taking customers' orders, bringing customers their food, and bringing dirty dishes from tables to the kitchen. In addition to these tasks, the BellaBot waiters are capable of displaying facial expressions through their large eyes and digital display face.
The BellaBots were designed by Pudu Robotics, a Chinese robotics and automation company. The original name of the robot is the PuduTech Robot, though it has been renamed to fit the Bella Italia environment. The fleet of BellaBots will be trialed firstly at a single Bella Italia location where the company will assess the value of robotic workers in terms of operational costs, efficiency, and staffing constraints.
