Medical Science Breakthroughs - The Autonomous Artificial Heart (VIDEO)
The Autonomous Artificial Heart

Well-heeled heart disease patients have a new lease on life with the development of the world’s first fully-functioning autonomous artificial heart. While its $192,000 price tag is steep, its incredible functions make this investment quite literally the best life decision one can make.

The artificial heart is equipped with pressure and altitude sensors much like those utilized in airplanes that monitor blood flow. The autonomous heart responds instantaneously, increasing and decreasing blood flow almost exactly like a real heart does. Unlike previous iterations of artificial hearts, this version does not need to be externally controlled and functions independently within the body.

According to Daily Tech, the heart is developed by Carmat with the support of EADS, a European space and defense group.

Past hearts have also only had one pump, but the new heart features two, just like the real heart. It pumps blood to the lungs and then pumps the returning blood to the rest of the body, just like in the real heart. The new heart is made largely of a combination of polymer and pig tissue, a similar design to modern heart valves, implanted in many people. (engadget)
