From Handmade Retro Arcade Games to Pinball Machine Desks

Within the maker movement, many people have taken to designing and building their own video game consoles, especially to revive their favorite retro arcade games or re-imagine some modern favorites.

This concept has seen some great DIY projects posted online so that others can replicate them. Some craftspeople also sell their wares on sites like Amazon, Etsy and eBay -- whether those be bespoke items, large, one-of-a-kind pieces or smaller products produced to scale. As just one example, Love Hulten is a Swedish maker who produces beautiful, handmade remakes of retro arcade games out of hardwood. They're completely playable and look like elegant furniture pieces.

The range of artisanal game consoles available demonstrates the convergence of two modern ideas: the nostalgia for the early video games of yesteryear and the desire to use modern technology to make complex, social media-shareable handmade crafts.
