London based architecture and design studio Grimshaw has completed and designed the Pulkovo international airport terminal in St Petersburg. The project was a joint collaborative effort with delivery architect Pascall+Watson and engineering studio Ramboll. The terminal was inspired by form and space; and the result is a structure that capitalizes on its practicality and sustainability with glimmering gold panels wrapped around its geometrically folded ceilings.
The roof of the airport is a simple flat surface designed to endure the heavy winter snowfall with an angular origami-like underside to help evenly distribute the weight of the structure. "We used this language of folding to take weight away from the mid-span and then to create more space and height for the passengers in the key spaces," says Ed Ross, a Grimshaw associate.
